mission statement
on the heels of eunice's post, let's talk about a mission statement. leave your ideas for different mission statements in the comments, and let's see where this leads. remember, our mission helps us to make decisions on where to invest our time and effort, what to emphasize, and what is just not within our scope.

i'll start by listing some ideas we'd like to connect:
Christ
kingdom
community
asian-american identity
growth
The two words that got my attention were kingdom and growth, but I realized that I was thinking more tagline than mission statement. Also, I just realized this now, but do want to focus on asian-american identity alone? I know we have quite a few international students and one of our ideas was to reach out to the entire Emory Asian population and not just Asian-Americans.
here's a first attempt:
ACF seeks to live life in the way of Jesus acknowledging our heritage as Asians and our identity as children of God.
thoughts?
it's good! maybe include kingdom somewhere in the sentence? ACF seeks to live the kingdom life, as in the way of Jesus, acknowledging our heritage as Asians and our identity as children of God. but that's just me being picky.
ACF seeks to encourage kingdom-minded life and growth as in the way of Jesus, recognizing our heritage as Asians and our identity as a community of followers of Christ (or "children of God" is fine too).
just to connect the ideas danny pointed out. nothing terribly original. but i'm not exactly sure how well "kingdom-minded" is going to sound to non-believers. i just put it there because i like the term. :]
yeah-- sort of what tim was saying, i wonder if we need to explicitly state "kingdom" since that's loaded language. i figured anybody can understand "life in the way of Jesus" versus kingdom living.
so kingdom was wrapped up in that phrase, community in the plural language, and growth expected in this pursuit.
and that's why i'm no good and reading comprehension
well-- so far we've only heard from three people. maybe tim & i are the ones out of touch, and "kingdom" should be included in our mission.
"ACF seeks to live life in the way of Jesus acknowledging our heritage as Asians and our identity as children of God."
i wasn't at chapter camp or anything so i might not make any sense. i'm kind of behind...
personally, i feel like if we want to use the term "kingdom", it'd have to be defined. it could mean differenct things to different people.
also, i feel like right now it's a little vague. how do we "live a life in the way of jesus" and how are we going to "acknowledge our heritage as asians"? this may seems obvious to us, but what about other nonchristians and nonasians. or does that not matter?
also, as it is right now, to me it sounds as if acknowledging our heritage as asians is the way in which we live like jesus. but i don't think that's what we want to imply. right? there might need to be something (maybe the word "while"? or a comma or something?) between the first part of the statement (until "way of jesus") and the rest of it.
and, just a thought, but should we mention something specifically about our presence on emory's campus? or at least the college campus setting? i feel like that's a significant part of acf.
sorry, i don't mean to suddenly enter the scene and juat criticize everything. it's not a bad start, and you don't have to agree with me. just some thoughts. ;)
thanks, lydia-- that's a valuable perspective since everyone else in ACF did not go to chapter camp either.
still need to find a way to tie these ideas together, in a simple, memorable way. gotta love reductionism...
